The film is a remake of the super hit 'Kunhikoonan' in Malayalam. This film is even better than the original one. Thanks to Surya's acting and Vivek's comedy. There is no such thing as a born actor. With hard work, you can achieve anything, this is the lesson that the film teaches through Surya. When one saw his initial films, one would never have thought hat he would rise so high. Hats off to you! Sashishankar, who directed the Malayalam version has directed this film too. Buck toothed, hunch-backed with deformed legs- this is what Chinna looks like. Nobody was willing to give him their daughter in marriage. He falls in love with the blind destitute Shenbagam whom he offers refuge. He lies to her about his looks and personality. He arranges for Shenbagam's eye surgery. She wants to see Chinna first when she regains her sight. But Chinna is afraid that she wouldn't like his looks so shies away from her. Will Shanbagam accept him forms the rest of the movie. There is another role played by Surya as Karthick to bring some suspense and thrill to the movie. Surya has done a fabulous job as Chinna. He has portrayed his fear and longing very well when he wonders if she will accept his deformed looks as he limps along towards her. He also plays the emotions of a man (Karthick) who is serious to see the girl who had been given the eyes of his dead girlfriend. Jyothika has lived the role of the blind girl. In the end when she falls on Chinna's feet and begs him to accept her, she touches our hearts. Vivek takes care of comedy throughout the film as a marriage broker. Though it is not right of him to make fun of some people of physical deformities, one tends to forgive him because they are humorous. Malavika appears for the 'Ambulimaama' song alone. The villain newcomer Babu is okay too. It is not clear if the story happens in a village or a city. Some scenes look like villages. Some scenes have the typical elements of the city, like college, boxing and DSPs. Yuvan Shankar Raaja's 'Ambulimaama' and 'Kaatru yenbadhaa' are sure hits. Rathnavelu has captured the looks of Kerala beautifully. The dialogues are very powerful and precise. Usually, the ugly heroes are killed and the good looking hero gets the girl, but the unusual climax is new to Tamil cinema. You need to appreciate the director for it. An enjoyable commercial film.
