Why this rating is different: The rating is not based on collection or popularity alone. As someone who watches a lot of movies (well almost all), these are my own judgmental rating. My apologies if these ratings have disappointed you (ofcourse we can debate - gokul@cooljilax.com).

Paruthiveeran

: Karthik & Priyamani

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Director: Ameer

A village movie which touched our hearts. The film had characters that were real, performance that was extraordinary, excellent music, lively cinematography and great direction. The climax was shocking and was debated by many. Muthazhagu & Paruthiveeran will live for long. Only sore point: An unrealistic 300+ days

Sivaji

: Rajini & Shreya

Music : A R Rehman

Director : Shankar

Highest grosser in history of tamil cinema. The film made a business of 100+ Crores. Released in 18 theatres in Chennai! All because of Rajini's presence combined with Shankar's magical narration. The film had all the ingredients wanted by Rajini fans and family audience. Entire country was amazed at Rajini's charisma. 175 Days.

Pokiri

: Vijay & Asin

Music: Manisharma

Director: Prabhudeva

Another hit for Vijay. This time it was bigger than Ghilli. A remake of telugu hit by the same name. Vijay's action and Vadivelu's comedy ensured repeated audience. Prabhudeva's story telling was better than the telugu original. 175 Days.

Mozhi

: Prithiviraj, Prakashraj & Jyothika

Music: Vidyasagar

Director: Radhamohan

A clean family entertainer. Subtle comedy, simple story telling, good music and an outstanding performance by Jyothika made this movie a big hit. This was Jyothika's last film (as announced by her) and she signed off in style. It was supposed to be a multiplex movie but turned out to be a hit in all centres. 100 days.

Chennai 600028

: Shiva, Premji & Vijayalakshmi

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Director: Venkat Prabhu

Innovative! A super hit film with entirely new faces. Credit should go to debutant director Venkat Prabhu. This cricket story is a light hearted Lagaan. The climax is one of the best in recent times. "Saroja Saaman Nikalo" and "Enna Kodumai Sir Ithu" became the dialogues of the year. 100 days.

Pollathavan

: Dhanush & Dhivya (Ramya)

Music: G V Prakashkumar

Director: Vetrimaaran

This is a commercial version of Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thief (!). The director was an assistant to Balu Mahendra and everyone was expecting a slow paced family story. This fast paced action entertainer was the dark horse of Diwali. Dhanush has given a superb performance. The remix song "Engeyum Yepothum" created waves. Running towards 100 days.

Katrathu Thamizh

: Jeeva & Anjali

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Director: Raam

It is not a surprise....tamil audiences are known to miss out some real good movies. This was one of them. This masterpiece came from an assistant to director Mahendran. The self narrated story of a tamil graduate is new to tamil cinema. The concept of Surrealism is difficult to understand and the directed has handled it well. Amazing acting by Jeeva. The film is ahead of its time and hence a commercial flop.

Periyar

: Sathyaraj & Kushbu

Music: Vidyasagar

Director: Gnyana Rajashekar

This is the best bio pic in tamil. Comes from the same director who gave "Barathi". Sathyaraj has played the "role of a life time" to perfection. The director has cleverly avoided some controversial scenes and has made the movie as entertaining as possible. This film will enthuse others to record history on celluloid. 100 days.

Ammuvagiya Naan

: Parthiban & Barathi

Music: Sabesh-Murali

Director: Padmamagan

Another good movie that lost steam despite good word of mouth. This bold story of a sex worker by choice deserves full marks for its narration. New face, Barathi, has given a superb performance. Parthiban has extended all support. Everyone who watched the movie appreciated it. The film flopped because they did not force the others to watch it.

Patchaikili Muthucharam

: Sarathkumar, Andrea & Jyothika

Music: Harris Jeyaraj

Director: Goutham Menon

I can't help it. This film flopped too. Brilliant adaptation of english film, "Derailed". Jyothika was splendid in her negative role. The story of a common man who slips morality and what follows forms the base of this racy thriller. Harris Jeyaraj's music is an asset to this film. I strongly recommend a one time watch.

Other Notable Releases
Naan Avan Illai Inimey Naangathaan Kaanal Neer
First tamil remake film. It requires a lot of confidence to remake a flop movie. It requires talent to make it a hit. Director Selva had both.

India's first 3D animation movie, was made in tamil

This movie is here to appreciate the blind confidence of this hero, Ritesh. He called himself as "Rising Star" and advertised it like a super star film. Hilarious!!
