Why this rating is different: The rating is not based on collection or popularity alone. As someone who watches a lot of movies (well almost all), these are my own judgmental rating. My apologies if these ratings have disappointed you (ofcourse we can debate - gokul@cooljilax.com).

Anjathey

: Narain, Prasanna & Vijayalakshmi

Music: Sundar C Babu

Director: Myskin

Next generation tamil movie. Can be used as a lesson in film schools. Myskin followed up "Chitiram Pesuthadi" with this excellent thriller. The film scored in all areas: music, cinematography, lightings, narration, editing and acting. This experimental director is tamil cinema's Orson Welles. 100 day run was to less for this film. A benchmark for future.

Subramaniapuram

: Jai, Sasikumar & Swati

Music : James Vasanthan

Director : Sasikumar

Wow! Another great movie. Is rated second only because of excessive violence. This Tarantino style narration and story of betrayal is new to tamil cinema. The director required a lot of self confidence to take such a film with lesser known faces. The 80s retro feel and James Vasanthan's music are the other plus points. Biggest hit of 2008. A promising debut for director. 100 Days.

Poo

: Parvathy & Srikanth

Music: S S Kumaran

Director: Sasi

Easily amongst the best love stories in recent years. Narrating girl's side of love is less attempted in tamil cinema. Director Sasi made this film with so much care that you love every character in the film and cannot avoid walking out without the satisfaction of having watched a good film. Brilliant performance by Parvathy. Poetic film. Sad that the film is yet to pick up commercial pace.

Saroja

: SPB Charan, Premji & Shiva

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Director: Venkat Prabhu

Another original film from Venkat Prabhu. This stylish film is entirely a director's film. Critics claimed this is adapted from "Judgment Night" which is a pure thriller. The director's brilliance lies in making it a Comedy Thriller - a unique genre. 100 days.

Dasavatharam

: 10 Kamals & Asin

Music: Himesh Reshmaiya & Devisri Prasad

Director: K S Ravikumar

A Kamalhassan show. Kamal reached a new peak with 10 different roles in one movie. Excellent dialogue delivery, great acting, good humour and a decent screenplay made this film the biggest grosser of the year. Many raised questions on whether 10 roles were required but all of them watched the movie more than once. 100 days.

Poi Solla Porom

: Karthik & Piya

Music: MG Sreekumar

Director: Vijay

Director's earlier film Kireedom was a washout and he bounced back with this remake of Hindi hit, "Khosla Ka Khosla". Audiences were able to relate to this dark comedy on land sharks. The dialogues were hilarious and acting was realistic. A multiplex hit. 100 days.

Santhosh Subramanium

: Jeyam Ravi & Genelia

Music: Devisri Prasad

Director: Raja

Another telugu remake from the king of remakes "Raja". His fourth hit in a row. There was no originality and it was a frame to frame copy of "Bommarillu" including the songs, dialogues & acting. Genelia's performance and the father-son bonding story was a huge hit amongst our family movie loving audience. 100 days.

Yaradi Ne Mohini

: Dhanush & Nayantara

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Director: Jawahar

One more telugu remake. Selvaraghavan's assistant helped reproduce his telugu hit, "Adavari Maatalukku Ardhaalu Veruley". Ofcourse, the film had some minor customizations to suit tamil nativity. Dhanush and Nayantara suited the role better than the original performers. Their onscreen chemistry and Yuvan's songs was critical to the 200 day run.

Jeyam Kondaan

: Vinay, Bhavana & Lekha Washington

Music: Vidyasagar

Director: Kannan

A neat presentation by Manirathnam's assistant Kannan. Fine performance by the lead stars, good humour and racy screenplay helped this movie to be a hit. Vidyasagar's music was a let down. Lekha Washington was a good find and can go greater heights if she chooses the right roles. 100 days

Raman Thediya Seethai

: Cheran, Pasupathi & Vimalaraman

Music: Vidyasagar

Director: Jegan

Another director who makes a comeback. Jegan's first film with Vijay (Pudhiya Geethai) was a big flop. RTS is a tremendous effort by the director. 3 stories of self confidence with a good-hearted hero and 5 heroines had a seamless screenplay. The timing of release was bad and hence the film could not make a big impact. Watch it on DVD if you get time and you will agree with me.

Other Notable Releases
Akku Bheema Naayagan
Tamil version of Crank. Featured here because such efforts shouldn't go un-noticed. A better screenplay could have made a difference.

Everyone expected this film to be a hit but the result was different. Vikram spent two years in the making of this film.... what a waste!

Everyone expected this film to be a flop but the result was different. last year, Ritesh was mocked by me in this compilation and I thought I have to make it up. Good effort!
