Why this rating is different: The rating is not based on collection or popularity alone. As someone who watches a lot of movies (well almost all), these are my own judgmental rating. My apologies if these ratings have disappointed you (ofcourse we can debate - gokul@cooljilax.com).

Pasanga

: Kishore, Sriram & Vega

Music: James Vasanthan

Director: Paandiraj

A movie with kids made for the adults. Path breaking. The story is about a school boy who is high on confidence, dreams big, reaches his goals and ensures that people with him also succeed. We have our own Majid Majidi in director Paandiraj! A commercial success with 100 day run. The film was produced by director Sasikumar of "Subramaniyapuram" fame.

Naadodigal

: Sasikumar & Ananya

Music : Sundar C Babu

Director : Samuthirakani

Wow! Another great movie with director Sasikumar as hero. The fast paced first half ensured repeat audience. Especially the 20min before interval was like a gripping climax. The second half balanced the high expectations set in the first half. A movie for all centres and you should not miss this film. One of the biggest hits of 2009. 100 Days.

Yaavarum Nalam

: Madhavan & Neethu Chandra

Music: Shankar Eshaam Loy

Director: Vikram Kumar

A cool suspense thriller. Ghost genre was almost forgotten in tamil cinema and this film renewed the genre. The story about real life incidents being mirrored in a television serial is original and gripping throughout. A hollywood version is likely to release in 2011. Thrillers normally don't get repeat audience, yet this film managed a 100 day run.

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu

: Vishnu, Saranya Mohan & Kishore

Music: Selvaganesh

Director: Suseendran

We have seen many sports movies in Indian cinema. However, this one had our own Kabadi in it and a soft romance woven into the story line. The characters were lovable. Kishore excelled as a strict coach. This was no world cup, it was a local match...yet the players won our hearts. 100 days.

Ayan

: Surya & Tamanna

Music: Harris Jeyaraj

Director: K V Anand

Take a bit of some excellent foreign movies (Maria Full of Grace, Bourne Ultimatum, Blood Diamond, etc), add some great songs, good performance from lead actors, foreign locales and lots of logical masala...what you get is Ayan. Add to this, the marketing techniques of Sun TV and what results is a big commercial success. A great entertainer. 100 days.

Unnai Pol Oruvan

: Kamal & Mohanlal

Music: Shruthi Hassan

Director: Chakri Toletti

A good remake of hindi hit, A Wednesday. Great acting by Kamal but it was Mohanlal who walked away with all honours. It was definitely a flawless remake. The question is do you need Kamal for this movie? We expect more from him than such remakes. His Virumaandi was against capital punishment and in this film he contradicts his own views. Made money because of low production cost.

Sindhanai Sei

: Yuvan & Madhu Sharma

Music: Thaman

Director: Yuvan

Another reason why I hate our tamil film audience. This film could not manage a run beyond 2 weeks. It is a Guy Ritchie meets Tarantino kind of film. Interesting premise with many twists and an excellent climax. There is excessive violence but a great directorial debut. Watch it atleast on DVD.

Vettaikaaran

: Vijay & Anushka

Music: Vijay Antony

Director: Babusivan

A treat for Vijay fans. If you like Vijay type of movies, you will love this film. Though critics say that this film is no different from other Vijay films, it is turning out to be the biggest hit in Vijay's career. Sun TVs marketing push has helped considerably. With the right mix of comedy, action, dance and mass masala, it is a perfect family entertainer.

Renigunta

: Jhonny & Sanusha

Music: Ganesh Raghavendra

Director: R Paneerselvam

Another action laced love story. Influenced by City of Gods but there is a love story in second half that makes this a lovable film. The climax is poetic justice. This film is a commercial success. Still running in theatres.

Peraanmai

: Jeyam Ravi

Music: Vidyasagar

Director: S P Jananathan

The director is known for meaningful and different cinema (Eyarkai & E). This film is no different. Well researched action film on a forest officer who fights terrorists with help from 5 college girls. Jeyam Ravi has come up with a honest performance and is excellent (his best role till date). All credits to the director for touching upon a sensitive topic and for the way it has been handled. Running towards 100 days.

Other Notable Releases
Eeram Kandaswamy Kancheevaram
A decent thriller that became a commercial success. The story telling technique was gripping and the cinematography was an added plus. Director Shankar produced this winner.

Everyone expected this film to be a mega hit but the film managed to break even only because of a wide release. Vikram wasted another two years in the making of this film. Last year this slot was used for Bheema!

One of the best art house movie in recent times. The film won national award for Prakashraj. Director Priyadarshan deserves a standing ovation for his effort.

Other Commercially Successful Films (No particular order)

Maayandi Kudumbathinar

Maasilamani Siva Manasula Sakthi
