Why this rating is different: The rating is not based on collection or popularity alone. As someone who watches a lot of movies (well almost all), these are my own judgmental rating. My apologies if these ratings have disappointed you (ofcourse we can debate - gokul@cooljilax.com).

Angaadi Theru
Music: Vijay Antony & GV Prakash Director: Vasanthabalan |
This one is a classic. A film that brings to life the plight of workers in Chennai - ranganathan street. The engrossing and entertaining way the story was told made it a commercial success. Director Vasanthabalan proved that "Veyil" was not just a flash in the pan and this film was even better. Though a director's movie, the songs, photography and performance by lead actors played a role in the film's success. |

Nandalala
Music : Illayaraja Director : Myskin |
Inspired by Takeshi Kitano's Kikujiro, this is another classic. The film was in the cans for over a year and finally saw light. It is a road movie involving a boy and an unstable man going in search of their mothers. They meet different characters on their way and what happens in the end is heart moving. Illayaraja deserves a national award for lifting the movie to a different level. Credit to Myskin for making such a bold film. Don't miss. |

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa
Music: A R Rehman Director: Goutham Menon |
Goutham Menon is back with what he is good at, a candy floss love story. Though slow at times, what made the film click is the chemistry between the lead pair, ARR's music and the climax. Simbu rocked with a subdued performance and Trisha was an angel on screen. The songs became the new national anthem for college students. |

Mynaa
Music: Imman Director: Prabhu Solomon |
Small movie that became a big commercial success. This was a travel movie involving an escaped convict who is taken back to the prison along with his lover. The director managed to bring out the best in new comer Vidarth and one film old Amala Paul. Excellent photography and great music made audience relate more with this love story. Proved again that good screenplay makes a lot of difference. |

Thamizh Padam
Music: Kannan Director: C S Amuthan |
Brilliant! At a time when tamil movies were becoming a spoof, Amuthan came with this innovative spoof on tamil movies. Shiva was perfect as the "tamil hero". Audiences were laughing from start to end and even after they reached home. The songs, fights and even the sentimental scenes were hilarious. |

Enthiran

Made with a budget of Rs.160 Crore, this is tamil cinema's costliest production. One magic word "Rajini" combined with the brilliance of Shankar, ensured that the producers easily recovered the money. This Sci-fi movie on a Robot had mind blowing special effects and great contribution from the entire cast and crew. Rajini became an all India phenomenon. |

Another small film that made it big. Thanks to the comedy laced script and Vimal's performance as Kalavani. Director Sargunam surprised everyone with this village love story involving a Happy-Go-Lucky hero and a school student. Saranya as hero's mother gave a brilliant performance. |

This "Titanic" inspired period love story set during Independence time, was an instant hit. Director Vijay used the flashback narration technique effectively. Singam
Music: Devi Sri Prasad Director: Hari |
Hari seems to be perfecting the art of making mass masala movies. Surya was excellent as the angry cop. The film had "blockbuster" written all over it as it had everything that audience were looking forward to: explosive action, glamorous Anushka, Vivek's comedy and a villain who always loses to the hero. |

Naan Mahan Alla
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja Director: Suseendran |
Suseendran proves that he is here to stay. The "Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu" director, dished out a violent love story that worked with the audience. Though the first half and second half looked like two different movies, both halves were interesting. Yuvan's music rocked. |

The entire film was shot using a Digital SLR camera and that makes it worthy of a guinness record. Production cost was reduced considerably!

Saami comes with another controversial film. A storyline where the heroine has an affair with her father-in-law wasn't appreciated by the conservative film-goers. The heroine changed her name and distanced herself from the movie. |
India's first view point film (ie.) the camera acts as the eye of the film's protagonist and the entire movie is as seen by the protagonist!
