Another good year for the tamil film industry. Though not many movies were successful, many small budget movies broke-even thanks to satellite rights. For the first time in many years around 150 tamil movies released and this is a record. Except Rajini and Surya, the movies of big heros flopped miserably. The year was dominated by three production houses: Sun Pictures, Red Giant and Cloud Nine. All three from the DMK Family. Together they distributed movies like THEERATHA VILAAYATU PILLAI, SURA, SINGAM, THILLALANGADI, ENTHIRAN, VINNAITHAANDI VARUVAAYA, MADARASAPATTINAM, BOSS ENGIRA BASKARAN, MYNAA, MANMADHAN AMBU, THAMIZH PADAM, PAIYAA, NAAN MAHAAN ALLA, VA and RATHA SARITHIRAM. They ensured that every month atleast one of their releases was there on the screen. They tasted success and also suffered failures but their dominance was so strong that it created some kind of an uneasy feeling in the industry. Forget the criticisms, they gave a lesson or two on the power of marketing. The year belongs to "The Three Nidhis: Kalanidhi, Udayanidhi and Durai Dayanidhi".

Shankar gave the biggest hit in tamil cinema history - ENTHIRAN. However, like last year's VETTAIKARAN, some greedy theatre owners who bought the film for high price suffered losses. Some new directors gave big hits with small films: Sargunam's KALAVANI, Amuthan's THAMIZH PADAM. Santhanam is again the Comedian of this year. His comedy played a big role in the success of BOSS ENGIRA BASKARAN. He was good in all the movies he acted including MANDIRA PUNNAGAI. Vadivelu and Vivek were ordinary. |

Yuvan was brilliant in NAAN MAHAAN ALLA, PAIYAA, BAANA KATHADI, BOSS ENGIRA BASKARAN and KAADHAL SOLLA VANTHEN. Harris Jeyaraj had no releases in 2010. GV Prakash made an impact in AAYIRATHIL ORUVAN, MADARASAPATINAM, VA and along with Vijay Antony in ANGAADI THERU. Rehman was at his usual best in VINNAITHAANDI VARUVAYA, ENTHIRAN and RAVANAN. Vidyasagar, Imman, DSP and James Vasanthan gave good music too. |

AR Rehman won two grammy awards for his music in Slumdog Millionaire.
The best fight scene was between two comedians and it happened outside of the movies. Vadivelu filed a police complaint that fellow comedian Singamuthu cheated him of 25 Crores in a land deal. Singamuthu was arrested and was in jail for a short duration.
Actress Kanaga (KARAKATTUKARAN) complained that her husband is missing and named "Aavi" Amutha as a suspect. Amutha said she talks only with Aavi (Ghosts) and does not know Kanaga's husband.
Actress Manorama complained that she was ill treated by employees in Tirupathi temple.
Director Seeman was arrested for some controversial remarks on Srilanka issue
Actor Vijayakumar and his daughter Vanitha fought over the custody of Vanitha's son. The fight continued into 2011.
The love story of Prabhudeva and Nayanthara was in news throughout the year. Prabhudeva's first wife Ramlath gave fierce interviews to the media. Finally, the couple applied for a divorce in what seems to be the costliest divorce in tamil film industry. Nayan and Prabudeva are likely to get married in June 2011.
Director Selvaraghavan divorced his love wife Sonia Agarwal. Sonia has started acting in films again. Actress Meera Vasudevan divorced her husband. Actor Arvindswamy divorced his wife.
Sarathkumar's JAGGUBHAI was available for download in the internet even before the film was released. The movie was released in a hurried manner and flopped miserably. All the noise on controlling piracy also flopped.
Rajinikanth's daughter Soundharya (producer of GOA) got married. The entire film and political fraternity graced the occasion. Rajini's fan club members were not invited and this led to some controversy.
Actor Prakashraj who divorced his wife, Lalithakumari, got married to choreographer Poni Verma. Others who tied the knot. Actors: Bala and Vishnu. Actress: Rambha (Ullaththai Alli Tha), Navya Nair (Azhagiya Theeye) and Comedian: Ganja Karuppu
Tamil Cinema had to face the loss of Actor Murali (IDHAYAM, PUTHU VASANTHAM, PORKAALAM), Cochin Haneefa (Actor cum Director), Singer Swarnalatha, Music Director Chandrabose and Comedian SS Chandran.
